Filecoin Powers The Defiant’s Mission to Preserve Journalism - Crypto News Flash
The Defiant, a media outlet known for its coverage of DeFi and Web3, has decided to archive all of its content—both old articles and upcoming publications—on the Filecoin network. This move isn’t just a technological fad. They want to ensure that the information they’ve built over the years isn’t lost due to a server crash or a broken link.
From Newsroom to Blockchain: Every Article Locked on Filecoin
Every article is now stored on an Akave-based storage system, which runs on Filecoin’s infrastructure. Akave not only stores the content but also tags and locks each file to ensure it remains accessible and cannot be manipulated. Articles now have a stamp: “Preserved on Filecoin.”
If you visit their website, you’ll see this stamp at the top of the article—and it’s not just for decoration. It’s a sign that the article has been tied to a decentralized storage system that’s more resilient than traditional news servers.
This move was officially announced at the Decentralized Media Summit in ETHDenver and has been met with positive reviews from various parties.
The Filecoin Foundation and the Decentralized Storage Alliance also promoted the move on social media, hailing The Defiant’s move as a pivotal moment for the future of digital media. Cami Russo, The Defiant’s founder, emphasized that this decision reflects the principles of decentralization they consistently champion in their daily reporting.
By archiving its content on Filecoin, The Defiant demonstrates its commitment to transparency and immutability. This move could also inspire other media outlets to consider using blockchain technology to protect their content from technical and external risks.
Securing Digital History With Cryptographic Preservation
Meanwhile, a few days ago, the CNF reported that over 100,000 digital files—including historical archives—have been timestamped and securely stored using Filecoin via the Numbers Protocol. This system utilizes cryptographic signatures and decentralized storage to ensure the authenticity and long-term sustainability of digital files.
Furthermore, earlier this July, the open science project OpSci archived over 500 terabytes of neuroimaging data onto the same network. Data from platforms like OpenNeuro, ABIDE, and NeuroVault is now permanently secured.
Interestingly, thanks to the Filecoin Plus program, this kind of scientific data can be stored for free—as long as it’s open and reproducible by the rest of the scientific community. Imagine decades of research data suddenly disappearing simply because traditional storage fails. Well, Filecoin is trying to prevent that.
If you think this is just for media and science, it’s not. Last June, Filecoin also started supporting Avalanche-based enterprises. They use Filecoin to store off-chain data like system logs and KYC documents. This collaboration allows developers to create modular blockchain applications—where transaction execution is fast, while long-term storage remains guaranteed.
Meanwhile, as of press time, FIL is changing hands at about $2.66, up 3.77% over the last 24 hours and 15.63% over the last 7 days.
