EigenLayer: The Re-staking Technology Leading ETH Ecosystem Innovation with TVL Surpassing $15.3 Billion
The Innovations and Challenges of EigenLayer: Opportunities and Potential Risks Brought by Re-staking Technology
EigenLayer brings new development opportunities to the Ethereum ecosystem through its innovative Restaking feature, allowing stakers to further utilize their staked ETH to support other protocols while maintaining their original stake, thereby maximizing capital value. EigenLayer's total locked value TVL has rapidly grown from $1 billion at the beginning of 2024 to $15.3 billion now, second only to Lido in the DeFi ecosystem, demonstrating strong market interest in this technology.
The core of the restaking technology is to reuse the staking pool of Ethereum, providing a trust foundation for decentralized services (AVS). When ETH validators redirect their withdrawal receipts to the EigenLayer contract, AVS can establish a reward and punishment mechanism to attract low-cost validation participation, thereby improving the capital utilization of validators and enhancing overall network security.
EigenLayer aims to address two main issues: limited innovation and trust fragmentation. By providing a consensus marketplace, EigenLayer reduces the startup costs for new projects while alleviating the problem of staked funds being siphoned off from the Ethereum mainnet. This mechanism helps to enhance the security and efficiency of the entire ecosystem.
However, the innovations of EigenLayer have also brought new security challenges:
The criminal cost for malicious operator ( has decreased. Due to the increased capital utilization, the operator may attack multiple services at a lower cost.
Malicious AVS may attract uninformed operators through false information, leading to their losses.
The complexity of the EigenLayer platform itself increases, which may introduce more potential security threats.
To address these challenges, the following measures need to be taken:
Set up a publicly accessible dashboard that allows AVS to check the operator's stake status.
Audit and assess the reward and punishment mechanism for AVS, and establish a regulatory committee.
Strengthen the security auditing and monitoring of the EigenLayer platform itself.

With the development of re-staking technology, the EigenLayer ecosystem needs to strike a balance between innovation and security. Professional code audits, dynamic monitoring, and security measures will be key to ensuring the safety of the platform and its users. Only by establishing a robust security framework can the continuous and healthy development of this ecosystem be supported.
