Former soldier plans TSL Cybertruck explosion using ChatGPT: Utterly disappointed with the United States, calling on the people to support Trump and Musk
The TSL Cybertruck bombing at the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, USA, on New Year's Day 2025, killed 1 person and injured 7 others. Police pointed out that Matthew Livelsberger, a 37-year-old former U.S. Green Flat Hat Special Forces soldier, used ChatGPT to plan the bombing. Livelsberger eventually committed suicide by raising a gun in the car, and the case became an important warning for AI in public safety.
First Generation AI Attack Plan
According to Bloomberg, US police said that this is the first time they have found generative AI used in attack planning, and Livelsberger used ChatGPT to find out how to construct explosive devices, ballistic speeds and other related information to further plan the explosion. "This will change the thinking of law enforcement in the future." The police were shocked. OpenAI responded that ChatGPT was previously designed to avoid providing harmful or illegal information. After this case, OpenAI also actively cooperated with the police to investigate.
Cybertruck hides a large amount of explosives inside
Police said Livelsberger added racing fuel to the Cybertruck and loaded the car with 27 pyrotechnics and 32 kilograms of steel balls. Then after parking outside the Trump Hotel, he immediately committed suicide with a gun, and the fire from the bullet may ignite the flammable material in the car, so it exploded. Surveillance footage from the scene showed that flames in the car quickly spread through the gaps in the doors, followed by an explosion. Despite the incredible power of the explosion, the Trump Hotel door glass escaped almost unscathed.
The smoke inside the car spread to the outside, followed by an explosion, not a terrorist attack, but a suicide action that awakened American attention to social issues.
The police pointed out that Livelsberger had no criminal record before his death, nor was he listed as a surveillance target by law enforcement agencies. The diary he left behind indicated that he believed he was being monitored, but he claimed that he had no intention of harming others and only hoped to draw attention to social issues through this action. Livelsberger was also worried about being labeled as a 'terrorist' by the outside world. The diary also mentioned that he had originally considered carrying out his plan on the Grand Canyon Glass Walkway in Arizona, but ultimately changed his target. The motive is still under investigation.
Police and relevant units inspect the wreckage of the exploded vehicle, thoroughly disappointed in the United States, and call on the people to support Trump and Musk.
Livelsberger's diary revealed his dissatisfaction with American political and social issues, as well as international events, including the War in Ukraine. He believed that America was already in decline and headed towards collapse. However, the diary does not show any hostility towards Donald Trump, the president-elect of the United States, or Elon Musk, the CEO of TSL (Tesla), but instead calls on the people of the country to "unite and support" these two individuals.
The challenge of new technology, AI's role in public safety
While the case has come to a conclusion, the police are still investigating Livelsberger's computer, mobile phone, and smartwatch, and working with the Department of Defense to analyze a six-page document in Livelsberger's possession that may involve national secrets. The police emphasize that this case is the first instance in the United States where generative AI has been used in an attack plot, and it may pose significant challenges in law enforcement and public safety in the future.
