Scroll zkEVM Getting Started Guide

This article will introduce beginners to how to interact with L2 Dapps, using Scroll zkEVM as an example. We will demonstrate the entire process using an on-chain tic-tac-toe game running on the Scroll L2 network. These skills are theoretically applicable to other Layer 2 networks as well.

Preparation: Install Wallet

If you haven't installed Metamask or a similar wallet yet, please complete the installation first. Metamask is a commonly used cryptocurrency wallet that can be used as a browser extension or mobile app.

Step 1: Set Up the Test Network

Scroll zkEVM has currently launched its alpha testnet, which is a Layer 2 network compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This means that smart contracts written for Ethereum can be directly deployed on Scroll zkEVM. The Scroll L2 alpha testnet is currently connected to the Ethereum Goerli testnet.

To get started, please visit the official Scroll website and follow the instructions to add the Scroll L2 network and Goerli testnet to your wallet.

Step 2: Obtain Test Coins

Next, you need to obtain some ETH from the Goerli testnet. There are multiple faucets available to use:

  1. Alchemy's Goerli faucet: You can receive 0.2 ETH each time, registration and login are required.
  2. PoW Mining Faucet: Obtain ETH by "mining" on the page.
  3. Paradigm Faucet: Requires Twitter login, can obtain 0.1 ETH each time.

You can choose one or more faucets to get enough test ETH.

Step 3: Cross-Chain Transfer

After obtaining Goerli testnet ETH, the next step is to transfer some ETH to the Scroll L2 testnet. Visit the official cross-chain bridge interface of Scroll and follow the instructions to transfer ETH to your address on Scroll L2. Please note that this process may take some time to complete.

Step 4: Experience On-chain Games

You can now try playing the on-chain tic-tac-toe game on Scroll L2. Visit the game website, connect your wallet, and create a new game. You will need to add another player's address to start the game, which can be a friend's address or another wallet address of your own.

After selecting the created game, you can start playing tic-tac-toe on the chain. This game also has an interesting feature: if you feel that you made a wrong move or do not want to lose the game, you can reset the game at any time.

Step 5 (Optional): Explore More Dapps

If you want to try more Dapps and games on Scroll, you can check the Dapp list provided by Scroll's official resources, where there are more interesting applications waiting for you to explore.

Through this introductory guide, you should have mastered how to perform basic operations on L2 networks like Scroll zkEVM. With the emergence of more innovative applications, L2 networks will bring more possibilities to the Ethereum ecosystem.
